Such Vast Still Spaces

Such vast still spaces exist between us
we cannot know who we might be
and even as we touch an elbow, an arm
we stand alone, shifting our eyes away

We cannot know who we might be
inside our skins and somewhere else besides
when we stand alone, shifting our eyes away
shuffling our feet, eager to run

Inside our skins and somewhere else besides
we try to connect, converse, but
shuffling our feet, eager to run
we might as well be trees, struck down

We try to connect, converse, but
unable to reach across that space
we might as well be trees, stuck down
in the earth, air charged all around

Unable to reach across that space
we leave one another at last
in the earth, air charged all around
by prayers or thoughts or rage

Yes, we leave one another at last
and as we touch an elbow, an arm
with prayers or thoughts or rage
such vast space still exists between us
